Please join us at the Environmental Justice Caucus on December 10th, from 6-8 PM. You’ll hear 3 amazing success stories from environmental justice leaders that have achieved dramatic change by leveraging brownfields resources for their underserved communities. Then, you’ll interact and learn from experts in different fields to help advance your own environmental justice projects. We want everyone to leave with actionable next steps and new relationships to carry you through the rest of the brownfields conference and into your community work!
The 3 environmental justice leaders who will present are:
Mujeres de la Tierra (Los Angeles, CA), is a community-based organization that focuses on environmental justice challenges along the LA River. They conduct multi-lingual workshops on using science and facts to reduce community fears and to engage residents in the community revitalization process. Mujeres de la Tierra has been utilizing this community driven approach to help influence the plans to revitalize the crown jewel site of the Taylor Yard G2 parcel, which aims to create habitat restoration, river access, recreational, and open space along 42 acres of the LA River.
The City of Phoenix (Phoenix, AZ), operates a Brownfields Land Recycling Program and has been collaborating with community-based organizations, health professionals, and food producers to transform community health through sustainable development. Using the principles of equitable community engagement, the program is working to reuse remediated brownfield sites into potential health clinics, healthy food outlets, urban agriculture sites, and community gardens for their underserved community members.
Environmental Health Coalition (EHC) is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to empowering people, organizing communities and achieving justice for low-income communities of color in the San Diego/Tijuana region. EHC is a nationally recognized and award-winning leader in working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders. They work to ensure that the community’s vision drives the solution to address public health, reduce pollution, and attract resources to places such as Barrio Logan, National City, City Heights, and Colonia Chilpancingo in Tijuana. A highlight of EHC’s work includes their successful advocacy efforts to ensure the construction of the Paradise Creek Apartments, 201 brand new safe and healthy, affordable housing development units in National City, CA.
